Anxious Pets

All the staff at the Summer Street Vet Clinic are committed to making you and your pets’ trip to the vet as pleasant as possible. We do however understand that it can be a stressful time for both of you.

If your pet does get nervous, please let us know when booking your appointment so we can tailor our services to meet their needs and minimise stress.

This may include allocating you an appointment at a quieter time, doing the examination outside under the tree or finding you a room to wait in without other animals present. For pets who need extra support (both dogs and cats) we can prescribe calming or sedative medication for you to give at home before your visit.

Alternatively, if you would prefer we came to you, please speak to our receptionists about a home visit.

Top Tips For Your Vet Visit

Use a crate or secure carrier to transport you cat or other small pet safely while dogs should be on a lead at all times
Desensitising your pet to their crate is really beneficial rather than have them panic and run away when they see it. Try getting it out a few days before your visit and place their feed bowls next to or inside it. That way they start to associate it as positive experience. On the day or your appointment, place your pets’ bedding in the carrier so it already has their scent on it.
Use Feliway Spray in your cat’s carrier or an Adaptil collar or spray on a bandana around your dog’s neck. Both of these are calming pheromones which help reduce stress.
If your dog is anxious in the car, try doing a few short trips that end up back at home or at the park for some fun time – or even pop in to see us, grab a few treats for your pet and just pop them on the scales before going again. This way they start to associate the car (and us !) with something fun and a treat.
If your dog or cat gets car sick, please talk to us so we can prescribe them medication to stop the nausea. Also, try to avoid feeding your pet within 3 hours of car trip and always take them out to toilet before travelling.
On arrival, let our receptionist know you’re here and she can show you to our quiet room or alternatively, you’re welcome to wait in the back garden under the tree and our vets will meet you outside.
