Desexing
Desexing offers long-term health and behavioural benefits for your pet. It also helps prevent unwanted litters. Summer Street Vet Clinic provides safe, professional desexing procedures with careful monitoring and attentive post-surgery care.
Desexing, or neutering, is a routine surgical procedure that prevents pets from being able to reproduce. In male pets, it’s known as castration, and in female pets, as speying. It’s one of the most common and straightforward surgeries we perform, and in most cases, your pet will be ready to head home by the evening of their procedure.
The ideal age for desexing is typically between four and six months, though pets of any age can still benefit from the procedure. Our team will discuss the best timing for your individual pet, taking into account their breed, size, and health.
There are many important reasons to desex your pet, including both health and behavioural benefits:
- Preventing unwanted litters, which can be costly and contribute to the growing number of stray and abandoned animals.
- Reducing the risk of serious diseases, such as testicular cancer and prostate disease in males, and pyometra (uterine infection) or mammary tumours in females.
- Eliminating the “heat” cycle in females, which can reduce stress and behavioural changes.
- Decreasing aggression towards other animals and people, especially in males.
- Reducing the urge to roam, helping to keep your pet safer at home.
- Lower council registration fees, as desexed pets are often eligible for discounted rates.
Our caring team will guide you through every step, from preparing your pet for surgery to their post-operative recovery at home, ensuring the experience is as smooth and stress-free as possible for both you and your pet.
