Microchipping
Microchipping gives your pet the best chance of being reunited with you if they ever go missing. It’s a quick, simple, and permanent form of identification that provides peace of mind for every pet owner.
A tiny microchip, about the size of a grain of rice, is implanted just under your pet’s skin, usually between the shoulder blades. Each chip contains a unique identification number linked to your contact details on a database. If your pet is ever lost, a vet or animal shelter can scan the chip and help bring them home safely.
Microchipping Requirements in NSW
In NSW, all dogs and cats must be microchipped and registered under the NSW Companion Animals Act 1998.
- Pets must be microchipped before being sold, or by 12 weeks of age, whichever happens first.
- All dogs and cats must be registered on the NSW Pet Registry by 12 weeks of age or immediately upon transfer to a new owner.
Registering Your Pet with Orange City Council
To register your animal, visit the cashier’s counter at the Orange Civic Centre with:
- Microchipping details
- A desexing certificate (if applicable)
- The lifetime registration fee
